How does the EAN checksum validation work?

The validator uses the standard modulo-10 algorithm: it multiplies digits by 1 or 3 alternately (starting from the right), sums them, and checks if the total modulo 10 equals 0. The last digit is the check digit that validates the entire code.

What's the difference between EAN-13 and UPC-A?
